Primary Purpose

Responsible for managing a research laboratory.

Key Accountabilities:

1. 

Responsible for general organization of the lab, including but not limited to:

  • Ordering supplies and equipment
  • Facility management (i.e. maintaining equipment log books, cleaning schedules)
  • Managing visitor access to lab and equipment
  • Invoicing for lab services.

2. 

Responsible for coordinating laboratory research:

  • Research projects as directed by Principal Investigator
  • Illumina library preparation and sequencing
  • Sampling trips i.e. soil, aquatic, and wastewater sampling trips.

3.

Responsible for training of undergraduate and graduate students, research associates, and visitors:

  • Safety training
  • Training on laboratory specific instruments
  • Training on laboratory specific protocols.

4. 

Responsible for overseeing and supporting research fellows and students as requested by Principal Investigator:

  • Technical support
  • Support in experimental planning.

Position Requirements

Education:

Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in biology or similar disciplines.

Experience:

Two or more years of experience in research laboratories with focus on microbiology, molecular biology, or microbial ecology.


Technical:

Knowledge of and experience with molecular biology techniques.

Interpersonal Skills:

Good interpersonal skills for communication with junior and senior scientists. Strong supervisory skills.      

Level of Responsibility:

Responsible for own research as well as overseeing and supporting research of fellow lab members. Ability to independently manage research.

Responsible and accountable for laboratory research.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Typical laboratory and research related demands.

Working Environment:

Work is performed in office or research laboratory. Sampling trips may be required depending on project type.
