Primary Purpose

This position is primarily responsible for the coordination and implementation of data collections for various research projects, including engagement and recruitment of participants and external organizations, completing research ethics applications, coordinating and executing data collection activities under tight timelines, maintaining the integrity of data collection protocols, and representing the organization with integrity and in a professional manner with external organizations.

Key Accountabilities:

1. 

Recruit research participants:  Communicate project purpose and data collection procedures to recruit and engage individuals and external organizations (e.g., school boards committees, schools, health units, etc.) to participate in various research projects.  This will involve, but is not limited to, oral presentations about the project, preparing recruitment materials and the completion of research ethics applications.  Create and foster positive professional relationships with participants and research partners in a way that values their time and effort and clearly communicates the importance of the research.

2. 

Coordinate and implement data collection in various settings, including schools, community centres, through social media, etc.  This will include preparing permission and data collection materials as well as scheduling data collections.  This may also include hiring, training, scheduling and overseeing casual staff/research assistants to carry out data collections and data processing.  Contribute as part of a project team to the development and refinement of data collection documents, protocols and procedures.  Brainstorm and problems solve refinements to data collection procedures as they arise including while in the field.

Data processing:  Prepare data or coordinate the preparation of data for analysis.  This may include hiring, scheduling, training and/or supervising of casual staff to prepare surveys for machine scanning.  It may also include taking direction from data managers and/or data analysts to prepare data files.

Assist with Project Management:  Assist Project Managers and Senior Managers with the planning, development, implementation and maintenance of assigned research activities and program evaluation as per grants or contracts from external funding agencies.

Position Requirements

Education:

 University degree, or equivalent in health promotion, social sciences.

Experience:

Courses and/or experience in research design, implementation and methods; Eligible to work in a school setting (i.e., obtain a successful police background/criminal record check).  Fluent in English.  Driver’s license required for occasional travel.  Fluency in French a strong asset but not required.

Experience working in a PC environment including the Windows Operation system and related software.

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

Internally, communicates with project team members to ensure the effective implementation of project protocols; externally, communicates with a variety of audiences, including school board research ethics boards, schools; and individual participants to recruit for participation in research activities.  

Level of Responsibility:

Responsible for ensuring the effective implementation and administration of data collection protocols and procedures in a way that maintains the integrity of the data collection goals and maintain Propel’s reputation within the research community; and ability to work independently and part of a cohesive team.

Decision-Making Authority:

Ability to identify successes and challenges while coordinating data collection activities; engage in problem solving with the team to optimize data collection successes; and brainstorm variations to data collection protocols to accommodate needs of participants and stakeholders while maintaining the integrity of the research.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Minimal demands typical of a position operating within an office environment; periods of extensive sitting at a desk and in meetings and concentrated use of visual senses; physical effort required to prepare data collection materials and substantial repetitive keyboard/mouse movement; high sensory demands because of required concentration and attentiveness to detail and regular distractions and interruptions.

Working Environment:

Much of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.  Office is located in a comfortable indoor area.  The work is varied and will involve extensive interaction with research participants and team members.  There are deadline pressures, while at the same time there is a demand thoroughness and accuracy.  Some travel may be required in order to implement the project data collection procedures, recruit participants or present project details.
