Primary Purpose

The incumbent spends significant portions of time in schools across Canada and around the world promoting mathematics as a discipline, conducting problem solving workshops, and presenting the many careers in and applications of mathematics.  In addition, the position provides assistance with the admissions and conversion done in the Faculty of Mathematics.

Key Accountabilities:

1.  Lead fun, interactive mathematics workshops for high school and elementary school students



2.  Maintain knowledge of national and international education systems



3.  Present overviews of an promote the University of Waterloo and its six Faculties and many undergraduate programs



4.  Participate extensively in admissions and conversion



5.  Develop metrics, analyze data, and report on results

Position Requirements


Bachelor’s degree with a major in Mathematics


Advanced knowledge of successful mathematics teaching strategies
Advanced knowledge of all facets of the University of Waterloo, the Faculty of Mathematics and the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing




Data analysis skills
Advanced public speaking and presentation skills
Advanced ability to relate to a wide variety of audiences
Advanced ability to think “on their feet” in any situation during a presentation

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

Dean of Math Office
Associate Dean of Math Office
Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing

Canadian and international high school students, their parents, teachers and school administrators

Level of Responsibility:

The job has specialized work with minimal supervision.

Decision-Making Authority:

Plan outreach visits with high school teachers/administrators for in class presentations.  Tailor all presentations to the specific grade level and abilities of the students – often this cannot be determined until the presentation is underway at the school.  Decide on locations, timing and format of events related to conversion Manage allocated budget for travel and events
Provide input to admissions decisions for Ontario applicants to the Faculty of Mathematics

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Moderate demands associated with the extensive travel required for the position.

Working Environment:

Travel:  Extensive travel required, including international travel

Working Hours:  Regular working hours when in the office.
Extensive evening and weekend work may be required when traveling for school visited and presentation.  May include extended out of town stays.

Physical Risks:  Physical risks typical of those associated with a regular business traveler

Psychological Risks:  Minimal exposure to disagreeable conditions beyond usual travel issues
