Primary Purpose

Responsible for managing and providing technical support for the day-to-day research operations of the Ecohydrology Research Group in the new Multiscale Environmental Particle Analysis Laboratory (MEPAL).

Key Accountabilities:

1. Manage laboratory resources and ensure quality control:

Maintain MEPAL equipment (which includes the CFI-funded XRD and XRF equipment) in working order and keep records of equipment use, failure, diagnostics, and repair
Contact repair technicians and vendors and initiate purchases as needed
Improve and ensure scientific quality control
Establish and maintain standard operating procedures (SOP) and good laboratory practices (GLP)
Ensure the proper, safe and clean use of the laboratory and equipment

2. Supervise students and researchers using lab facilities

Train students and researchers in advanced XRD and XRF techniques
Provide safety orientation and ensure compliance with safety protocols

3. Conduct service analyses for outside clients

Conduct analyses for outside clients and provide analysis/reports as required

4. Collaborate with the Ecohydrology Group and other laboratories and lab managers in the private, government, and public sectors

Provide scientific and technical support to clients (students, post-doctoral fellows, research associates, visitors, and external clients)
Work closely with the members of the Ecohydrology group and attend and participate in group meetings
Maintain constructive communication with group members and users of the MEPAL facilities
Provide support for analyses in the Ecohydrology laboratories

5. Provide scientific and professional guidance on research operations

Assist in the planning of experimental and field experiments;
Maintain up-to-date awareness of relevant scientific and research developments in the area of Ecohydrology;
Assist in the preparation of reports, protocols, funding applications and proposals;
Contributes to primary literature

Position Requirements

Education:

PhD in analytical chemistry, preferably with strong interdisciplinary component.

Experience:

Minimum 3 years experience as an analytical chemist preferably in the environmental sector

Technical:
Broad-based science skills that span analytical developments in aquatic and solid state chemistry. Lab safety, general analytical chemistry, spectroscopy (trained in operating the XRF and XRD equipment), microscopy (electron microscopy)

Coaching (undergraduate student assistants and graduate students), staff management (sharing and allocating undergraduate research support staff with other lab coordinators and researchers)

Decision-Making Authority:

Responsible for the daily operation of the MEPAL

Physical and Sensory Demands:

i.e. distractions, attention to detail, lifting carrying.
