Primary Purpose

Within the Office of Research (OR), responsible for advancing, implementing, and supporting a range of services related to analyzing and reporting research productivity and impact at the University of Waterloo. Works closely with staff in Institutional Analysis and Planning (IAP), the Library, and other departments to support the realization of the goals set out in the Transformational Research section of the University Strategic Plan and in the Strategic Research Plan, specifically with respect to the measurement of research achievements to inform high-level strategic decisions.

Key Accountabilities:

1. Manages the development, collection, tracking, collation, and analysis of metrics for the measurement of both input and output parameters related to UWaterloo scholarly research


2. Serves as an on-campus expert consultant and resource with respect to research data analysis


3. Synthesizes data analysis results to prepare, interpret, disseminate, and present reports or other materials related to UWaterloo sponsored research


4. Collaborates, advises, and consults


5. Maintains an appropriate level of institutional knowledge, job-related expertise, and awareness of industry standards


6. Adheres to effective project management and business

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

Internally, communicates with a wide range of departments and groups to provide effective analysis of UWaterloo scholarly research data.

Level of Responsibility:

Communicates comprehensive, accurately interpreted metrics of research activity broadly within the uWaterloo community to enable the achievement of the research-related goals set out in the University Strategic Plan

Decision-Making Authority:

Routinely makes decisions regarding the most effective means of operationalizing research data analysis initiatives, including allocation of resources, collaboration, work flow, consultation, and other key accountabilities.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Minimal demands typical of a position operating within an office environment; strain resulting from extended periods of sitting, concentrated use of visual senses, repetitive motion, and prolonged close attention to detail.

Working Environment:

Minimal exposure to disagreeable conditions typical of a position exposed to stress and pressure associated with project-management-level responsibilities and short deadlines; intermittent work outside the normal operating hours of the institution and occasional travel.
