Velocity Science Coordinator, Faculty of Science

Primary Purpose

The incumbent is responsible for day-to-day operations of Faculty of Science’s student entrepreneurship space, Velocity Science. Under the supervision of the ADR, they assess the technical and laboratory requirements of Velocity Science teams and provide functional direction with respect to general laboratory operations.

The overall objective of the position is to support the Faculty of Science’s strategic research and entrepreneurship initiatives through Velocity Science. Enhancement of innovative and entrepreneurial research activity within the Faculty of Science will be facilitated by this position.

Key Accountabilities:

1.  Provide administrative support to student entrepreneurship in the Faculty of Science, including but not limited to the Velocity Science laboratory.

 

2.  Ensure that Science’s student entrepreneurship lab (Velocity Science) is operating effectively in terms of routine adherence to university safety standards and best practices.

 

3.  Support Science students engaged in entrepreneurship by providing an assessment of the technical requirements of their project and providing guidance on how best to access the appropriate expertise and equipment.

 

4.  Support communications activity promoting Faculty of Science entrepreneurship and innovation.

 

5.  Support entrepreneurial and innovative activity of the Assoc. Dean – Research.

Position Requirements

Education:

Bachelor’s degree required (in Science or closely related discipline); advanced scientific degree preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a lab-based research or technical support role.

Experience with project management and related communication among stakeholders and participants.

Experience with preparation of proposals for research funding an asset.

Technical:

MS Word Excel PowerPoint Other

Microsoft Office Suite(word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Intermediate

Web-based systems

Proficient with Outlook Express, and SharePoint;

Working understanding of data entry on standardized forms and webpages.

Scientific Skills

Intermediate - technical skills (specific Science discipline);

Basic skills for methods, procedures and equipment (other Science disciplines);

Excellent problem solving skills.

Communications

Superior oral and written communication skills; ability to convey innovative scientific research to specific audiences (technical reviewers, investors and the general public).
