Primary Purpose

The Director, Commercial Operations is accountable to the Executive Director and VP Operations and Finance for the effective development and management of high quality commercial operations for the Federation of Students at the University of Waterloo. The incumbent is responsible for strategic planning, financial planning, fiscal viability, marketing strategies, administration and business operation with respect to all commercial operations. He/she must assure that these products and services support the values, vision and mission statements of the Federation as well as align with the organization’s long- range plan.

The Operations must be competitive, effectively market its services, forecast and develop business, and innovate in line with industry trends.

Key Accountabilities:

1.  To ensure that the Commercial Service outlets are managed effectively and provide a high level of service, product quality, cost effectiveness and financial viability :


2.  To assess the need for expanding retail offerings on campus and for expanding, revitalizing, renovating and constructing new outlets and to follow through on these needs once approved.


3.  To ensure the establishment of effective policies, procedures, information systems and structure for the administration and operation of the outlets:


4.  To provide overall management and oversight of the department and guide the managers and supervisors in Feds Commercial Operations in the effective management of their areas:


5.  To ensure appropriate budget and expenditure control, accounting and invoicing procedures, inventory control, stewardship of assets, and maintenance of equipment.

Position Requirements


Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Business, with a Master’s Degree in Business/related field an asset.


7 years management experience in a multi-unit operation.  Incumbent must have entrepreneurial business sense, good marketing skills, an innovative approach to product offering and services and an ability to create and execute viable business plans.  Competencies will include leadership, strategic thinking, people management, budget management and outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills.

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

the incumbent will need excellent negotiation skills to ensure product offerings are at student friendly pricing.  Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills to effectively manage and lead their team.  With the student leaders annual changeover, ability to develop working relationships quickly and effectively.  Will communicate with all levels of employees within the department to influence and motivate as well as to promote, justify and settle sensitive matters.  Externally this position will have significant contacts with customers and suppliers and will be involved in settling matters that are critical to the commercial operations department.

Level of Responsibility:

This position is responsible and accountable for the overall results of the commercial operations department.

Decision-Making Authority:

Responsible and accountable for establishing the priorities for the department and the changes to strategic business plans by consulting directly with the Executive Director and VP Operations and Finance.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Minimal demands typical of a senior management position operating within a student centric organization.

Working Environment:

As a student centric organization, not a typical office environment with significant interruptions and regular change to plans and priorities.
