Primary Purpose
Responsible for providing technical services and to be the safety officer for the entire institute, specifically focusing on all experimentalist’s research teams, students and interactive visitors.
Key Accountabilities:
1. Design, construction and test of electronic circuits upon request
- Circuit design and in-house manufacturing of printed circuit boards
- Develop, improve and constantly update electronic design guidelines to help aid students and researchers with their experiments
- Responsible for the operation, maintenance and service of a Copper electro-plating system
- Maintain and operate circuit-board milling machine
- Responsible for determining an in-house or outsourcing manufacturing process based on circuit design.
2. Managing an electronics shop
- Maintains adequate inventory to service all researchers
- Develop and maintain a cost effective sign out process
- Dispense and receive tools and equipment and ensure they are always functional, maintained and calibrated
- Maintain soldering workbenches and tools at the workshop for use by students and researchers
- Instruct students and researchers on how to use soldering and other shared equipment, as necessary, to ensure its efficient and safe operation
3. General Technical Services
- Design, fabricate and assemble custom equipment used for leading edge research
- Source and procure equipment necessary to assist faculty, researchers and students in their experiments
- Maintain equipment service records
- Assist in assembly and installation of specialized lab equipment and lab furniture
4. Responsible for the management of highly specialized and expensive, commonly shared equipment
- Design, implement and maintain a tracking system for equipment used in various labs
- Organizes and sets up Certification of equipment
- Determines the best and most economical approach to have equipment calibrated (in-house or outsource)
- Oversees maintenance and repair of shared equipment
5. Health, Safety and Environmental Coordinator and Fire Evacuation Coordinator:
- Ensures Health, Safety and Fire evacuation procedures, as per University policy, are followed and updated
- Follows up routinely with lab supervisors to ensure all labs comply with Health, Safety, Environmental and Fire Evacuation procedures
- Develop, improve and maintain Health, Safety and Environmental procedures and records
- Identifies recurring problems, documents them and suggests solutions to these problems either independently or in consultation with H&S office
Position Requirements
Education:
Successful completion of an Electronics Engineering Technologist Diploma (3 year program minimum).
Experience:
Ten or more years of proven industrial experience in Test & Service, Onsite Customer Support, Production & Manufacturing process, Applications Engineering with a strong scope in maintenance and service.
- Knowledge of electronics and mechanical assembly is an asset.
- Must be knowledgeable (service, calibrate and sometimes repair) of the following equipment:
- Digital Multimeters
- Oscilloscopes
- Frequency Generators
- Power Supplies (DC and AC)
- Circuit-Board Milling Machine
- Electroplating systems
- Reflow ovens
- Hydraulic Press for multi-layer designs
- Wire bonders
- Probe stations
- SMT placement technology
- Soldering and desoldering stations
- Strong knowledge of soldering and desoldering techniques is an asset
- Competent computer skills with ability to quickly learn new programs
- Strong knowledge of printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing
- Strong knowledge of electro-plating process
- Works with minimum supervision, is creative and adapts easily to different work environments and multiple priorities
- Able to maintain, service and operate milling machine for electronic circuit board manufacturing
- Able to use manual, semi-automatic and automatic power tools
- Knowledgeable of WHMIS and MSDS
- Keeps First Aid certification current
- Must have training in Health and Safety, Fire Evacuation, Accident and Injury Investigation as well as Risk Assessment

Level of Responsibility:
This job has specialized work requirements, works with minimal supervision and provides guidance to others. This position is responsible for providing efficient, economical and quick turn around technical services to facilitate and aid all research ventures in the Institute, without sacrificing quality and integrity, while providing the guidance and action needed to implement and maintain the best safe environment possible.
Decision-Making Authority:
- Responsible for the proper operation of the IQC-Technical Services Lab by consulting directly with the Supervisor and by obtaining feedback and recommendations from Staff, Faculty, Researchers and Students.
- Responsible for communicating UWaterloo Health & Safety guidelines to the Institute as well as coordinating safety training for all members of the Institute as required.
Physical and Sensory Demands:
- Moderate demands typical of a technical position in a research lab environment, which may involve some lifting.
- Sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time may be required.
Working Environment:
- Due to the operation of research laboratories, safety is a primary requirement.
- Occasional exposure to chemicals and/or fumes
- Occasional physical factors, such as soldering and the exposure to its fumes may be present.
- Occasional psychological factors, such as interaction with Researchers, Students and Visitors who may be upset, may occur
