Primary Purpose
This position is responsible for overseeing and meeting the data management and statistical requirements for all CCLR studies including supervising the Data Management Team and consulting with the CCLR research staff.
Key Accountabilities:
1. Develop statistical plan for study proposals
- Calculate appropriate study sample size.
- Determine what statistical tests will be required to answer study hypotheses.
- Provide guidance to study researchers to aid in the development of study proposals that meet sponsor requirements
2. Study data management
- Work with the Data Management Team to plan and implement the entry and storage of study data.
- Oversee database building, data entry, data backup, preparation of randomization schedules and data tracking systems.
3. Data analysis, reports and publications
- Direct the formatting of data into the appropriate format for analysis. This may be from internally entered data plus from data entered into external secure databases held by sponsors (via systems such as Quintiles and BioClinica).
- Conduct analysis according to statistical plan.
- Communicate results to study lead investigator.
- Provide input and information for study reports and assist lead investigator with interim and final reports.
- Provide input to writing process for publications in peer-reviewed and professional journal articles.
- Assist with writing grant submissions where statistical analysis plan and outline is required.
4. Supervise data management team
- Participate in the preparation of job descriptions and the hiring of members of the Data Management Team.
- Assign and monitor workload for Data Management Team members who are under direct supervision and ensure that they are collaborating effectively with other CCLR groups.
- Set priorities for the Data Management Team.
- Undertake regular assessment of Data Management Team members, who are under direct supervision according to University of Waterloo requirements.
5. Provide statistical consultation
- Collaborate with CCLR research staff and provide statistical consultation in order to satisfactorily meet overall study objectives.
- Recognize the need for consultation with the Systems Developer for data related projects and assist with the prioritization and implementation of new systems.
Position Requirements
Education:
Minimum of a Master’s degree in Statistics with a solid knowledge of methods for the design and analysis of data related to clinical research. Preference will be given to individuals with a Biostatistics degree, particularly in the area of ocular or vision-based research.
Experience:
At least 3 years’ experience working as a Data Analyst in a clinical research or related environment. Must have (proven) excellent writing and communication skills. Supervisory experience or the initiative to assume responsibility for supervising the CCLR Data Management Team is also required.

Nature and Scope
Interpersonal Skills:
Internally, this position works closely with the CCLR research staff, discussing information and collaborating on ideas and problems. In his/her role as supervisor of the Data Management Team, the incumbent is also involved in dealing with, influencing and motivating employees. Externally, the incumbent will interact with study sponsors to exchange and discuss information.
Level of Responsibility:
This position is responsible and accountable for the management of all data requirements within the CCLR. This includes supervising the Data Management Team who will be responsible for implementing specific aspects of data management, as well as providing statistical support for all projects and providing guidance to the research staff in the statistical design and outcomes for each study.
Decision-Making Authority:
This position is responsible and accountable for determining the statistical direction of the CCLR. The incumbent will need to understand the dynamics of analyzing vision data so that s/he can provide proper guidance to the research staff on what data needs to be gathered in order to reach the required outcomes for each study. This will also involve knowing what statistical tests are possible and deciding on the appropriate ones for the data collected. In addition, the incumbent will have the authority to influence the staffing needs of the Data Management Team.
Physical and Sensory Demands:
The incumbent experiences physical and sensory demands typical of a position whose main focus involves attention to detail and computer use. It requires extensive sitting, repetitive hand/finger movements and concentrated visual tasks in addition to dealing with many distractions over the course of the day.
Working Environment:
There is minimal exposure to disagreeable conditions typical of an administrative position required to occupy a cubical in an office shared with other individuals. This position is contingent upon funding.
