Primary Purpose
The Staff Optometrist provides optometric clinical teaching and instruction in the School's public clinics and laboratories as well as direct patient care in the School of Optometry & Vision Science, Optometry Clinics, on campus and external sites.
Key Accountabilities:
1. Clinical Teaching
- Supervision of optometry students in clinic areas; this includes grading of clinical performance in the areas of: case history and counselling, technical ability, diagnosis/management, record keeping, and efficiency. Instruction of optometry students in clinical laboratories ; this includes grading of clinical techniques and demonstration of clinical skills
2. Independent Patient Care
- Direct patient care without optometry students
3. Administrative Assignments
- Completion of patient files including referral letters (as required) in a timely manner
- Completion and submission of student grades in a timely manner
- Other tasks as assigned (e.g.,. Quality Assurance reviews)
Position Requirements
Education:
Doctor of Optometry degree (OD) or equivalent; completion of an optometry residency program.
Experience:
1+ years in an academic setting in a clinical supervisory role, preferably at Waterloo. .
General certificate to practice Optometry in Ontario required, including the ability to prescribe therapeutic pharmaceutical agents (TPAs)

Nature and Scope
Interpersonal Skills:
- Communicates with the school’s faculty, staff, students and patients and external practitioners, who are part of the circle of care of patients
Level of Responsibility:
- Supervises and teaches optometry students and provides patient care within the Optometry Clinic.
Decision-Making Authority:
- Grades optometry students
Physical and Sensory Demands:
- Minimal demands typical of an optometrist working in clinical settings
Working Environment:
- Minimal exposure to disagreeable conditions typical of an optometrist exposed to stress and pressure associated with daily clinical responsibilities.
- Assignments may occur during weekdays, evenings and Saturdays
- Teaching and patient care duties may occur at Waterloo teaching clinics or Waterloo-affiliated external sites
