Director, Centre for Teaching Excellence

General Accountability

This position is accountable to the Associate Vice-President, Academic Programs. The Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership and effective management of CTE’s broad range of programming and services. These include, but are not limited to, individual faculty consultations; events directed at graduate students, new faculty, and established faculty regarding face-to-face teaching, blended learning, emerging technologies, and internationalization (such as the Teaching Excellence Academy and the Certificate in University Teaching); online resources; curriculum and undergraduate program review consultations; and  research support services, including support of the Teaching-based Research Group.  The incumbent also directs budget and personnel decisions, priority and planning activities, and effective communication within the unit.   


The Director maintains memberships in and attends meetings of relevant regional and national professional organizations and societies and should pursue research concerning teaching and learning. The incumbent could be offered the opportunity to teach one course a year as an adjunct professor in an area of his or her expertise.

Nature and Scope

General Organization and Responsibilities of the CTE  

The Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE) fosters teaching and learning of the highest quality at Waterloo. The CTE Director reports to the Associate Vice-President, Academic Programs, and has various staff positions reporting to her/him.  

The Senior Instructional Developer/CUT, the Senior Instructional Developer/Consulting, the Senior Instructional Developer/Curriculum & Programming, the Senior Developer/Blended Learning, the Senior Instructional Developer/Emerging Technologies, the Research & Evaluation Consultant, the Program Coordinator, the Program Assistant, and the Administrative Assistant all report to the Director.
