Primary Purpose

Accountable to the Vice-President, Advancement, the Director, Alumni Relations is responsible for developing and directing effective individual and mass alumni strategies to ensure the growth of relationships and communication with all alumni. These strategies require intentional use of alumni volunteers as advisors, mentors and ambassadors, collaboration, coordination, negotiation and consultation within and amongst the university community and the external affinity community. The goal of this activity is to increase communication and connection of alumni to the University of Waterloo, in addition to building capacity for future financial support through philanthropy, sponsorship and partnerships.  Responsible for the overall strategic direction and management of the Alumni Relations unit within Advancement, the Director, Alumni Relations sets individual and team objectives and aligns the goals with the Advancement Strategic Framework and University of Waterloo strategic plan.

Position Requirements

Education:

University degree combined with leadership training/certification.

Experience:

More than 10 years of progressive alumni experience with a proven track record of achievement and success within Alumni Relations and/or Advancement. Competencies include strategic thinking/planning, people management, interpersonal, organizational and communication skills

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

Communicates with senior leadership across campus, building and maintaining constructive, collaborative and strategic relationships to build programs for alumni. Communicates with alumni and affinity partners, building and maintaining constructive, collaborative and strategic relationships to strengthen the connection alumni have with the university.   

Level of Responsibility:

This position is responsible and accountable for contribution to the results of the overall alumni plan and responsible for meeting the plan’s objectives. This position is also expected to be forward thinking, aware of trends and bring innovative and creative opportunities to the senior alumni team.

Decision-Making Authority:

This position is responsible and accountable, establishing the priorities of the alumni relations team to meet the alumni and advancement strategic plans by consulting with the Vice-President, Advancement.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Minimal demands typical of a senior leadership position operating within an office environment.

Working Environment:

Minimal exposure to disagreeable conditions typical of a senior leadership position. Exposed to stress and pressure associated with senior level responsibilities.
