Primary Purpose

The Arts Research Development Officer (ARDO) provides executive support to the Associate Dean of Arts, Research, in the areas of Faculty of Arts research development and grants and awards facilitation.  As well, the ARDO functions as chief Arts Faculty liaison with the Office of Research.  

The ARDO’s role is threefold:  1. to develop and promote a thriving research culture within the Faculty of Arts, 2. to facilitate research grant applications and award nominations within the Faculty of Arts, and, on occasion, 3) to conduct research.  To enable the ARDO to meet the position’s core objectives, she or he will be required to work collaboratively with individuals from a wide range of academic and administrative units, both within the University and outside of it, and to participate on research-relevant Faculty of Arts and university committees.

While the ARDO’s main focus will be on Faculty research development and grants and awards facilitation, the incumbent may also, when appropriate and when time permits, pursue his or her own research and, from time to time, participate in collaborative research projects within the Faculty.  Such research may involve the dissemination of research results at professional or academic conferences and in peer reviewed journals or other scholarly/professional formats.  To this end, the incumbent may establish a formal affiliation with an academic unit within the Arts Faculty.  Research activity should take up no more than 20% of the ARDO’s regular working hours.

Position Requirements

Education:

Master’s degree or equivalent experience, preferably in a field related to the Humanities or Social Sciences.

Experience:

• 3+ years relevant experience in a university research or research administration environment
• Demonstrated ability to review and edit grant proposals and budgets  
• Knowledge of tri-agency programs and policies
• Familiarity with other major research funding programs, both federal and provincial

Skills:
• Strong project- and time-management, attention-to-detail, and problem-solving skills
• Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to integrate and synthesize complex data and ideas
• Ability and confidence to communicate effectively with researchers from a variety of disciplines, with staff and senior administrators, and with sponsors
• Ability to work with confidential information
• Ability to work independently, and the capacity to work effectively and efficiently in a complex, fast-paced, and changing environment with numerous deadlines and priorities

Technical:

Advanced Advanced Intermediate Familiarity with databases and web software an asset. Proven ability to learn new software on demand required.

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

Academic:  To stay informed of the diverse and evolving research activities taking place within the Faculty of Arts, to be in a position to identify appropriate research development and funding/awards opportunities, and to cultivate the trust and cooperation necessary for successful research development, the ARDO will be expected to liaise directly with individual faculty members and researchers within the Faculty and foster collegial relationships with them.  

•  Administrative: To ensure the smooth flow of information, the successful implementation of strategic plans, and the timely submission of grant applications and award nominations, the ARDO will be required to develop collaborative liaisons with the following internal administrative units and personnel: Dean of Arts Associate Deans of Arts, Department Chairs and Research Centre Directors, Dean of Arts Office personnel (including the Arts Executive Officer and those in Arts Advancement, Arts Communications, Arts Finance), Office of Research personnel , University of Waterloo Marketing and Strategic Communications personnel, and  Federated University and Affiliated College Research Officers.

External:   To stay attuned to research funding trends and emerging research funding opportunities, the ARDO will be expected to develop links with appropriate personnel from national, provincial, foundation, and other granting agencies.    

Level of Responsibility:

Manages a Faculty-wide function or process that is highly specialized. The incumbent is expected to work with minimal direct supervision.

Decision-Making Authority:

Provides decision-making support to the Dean of Arts and Associate Dean of Arts, Research, on matters relevant to Faculty of Arts research

Physical and Sensory Demands:

 Minimal demands typical of an administrative position within an office environment.

Working Environment:

Working Hours: Regular working hours, with some evening/weekend work required during peak deadline periods.
