Primary Purpose

Accountable for developing and managing an operational framework for the financial activity that supports the teaching and research mandate of the Faculty of Science. The scope of activity includes integration of financial activity of academic departments, health professional schools and research institutes.   Key accountabilities include providing financial information at a professional level, and ensuring that appropriate internal processes and controls exist in support of financial planning for the Faculty of Science, and also to ensure that financial transactions originating in the Faculty of Science are recorded in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, university policies, sponsor/donor guidelines and tax legislation. From a financial perspective provide support for the Faculty of Science planning process.  Act as the primary resource for departmental administrative staff and faculty on financial administration.

Position Requirements


Undergraduate degree or equivalent related education/experience and a recognized accounting designation (CA, CGA, CMA).


8 -10 years of progressive accounting experience including the management of large scale, complex budgets. Proven experience in the development and recommendation of financial management strategies.  Competencies will include excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills, and proven planning and organizational skills. Supervisory/management experience is an asset.

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

This position is required to communicate information to senior management within the Faculty of Science for decision making purposes, and to provide direction to financial administrative staff to ensure adherence with generally accepted accounting principles, the university’s financial policies, procedures and guidelines. Communication skills must be geared to both financial and non-financial individuals. This position also interacts with senior, professional and administrative staff from numerous units across campus including, but not limited to, Finance, Office of Research, Institutional Analysis and Planning, Human Resources, ODAA, and other Faculties. External contact primarily is with auditors.

Level of Responsibility:

This position is responsible for providing professional advice within the Faculty of Science on financial matters underlying the Faculty’s activity, and to ensure that financial activity undertaken follows generally accepted accounting principles, and university policies and guidelines. This position assumes leadership for financial procedures within the Faculty. This position exercises signing authorization on all operating, trust, and endowment accounts within the Faculty of Science.

Decision-Making Authority:

This position exercises judgement in identifying improved financial processes for the Faculty of Science, and with senior management approval co-ordinates implementation of improved processes and internal controls. In collaboration with Finance interprets and applies University of Waterloo finance related policies and guidelines.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Minimal physical demands; operating within an office environment.

Working Environment:

Minimal exposure to disagreeable physical conditions. The Office of the Dean of Science is a busy team oriented environment.
