Nature and Scope

MAREP was launched in May 1993 at the University of Waterloo and is the inspiration of its founder and patron, Mr. Kenneth Murray. A major division of the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging, MAREP is an innovative program that integrates research and educational activities in an effort to improve dementia care practices in Canada and beyond. More specifically, the goal of MAREP is to enhance the ability of all those involved in dementia care, including persons with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia (ADRD), family members, formal care partners in community and long-term care settings, and policy makers to respond to the needs of persons with ADRD, and ultimately to enhance the care experience and improve the quality of life of persons with dementia, their families, and formal care partners. MAREP operates from an authentic partnership approach and has developed strong partnerships with persons with dementia, family partners in care, community programs, long-term care facilities, Alzheimer Societies and chapters, governments, and research organizations. The focus of MAREP is on social critical research in dementia and dementia care. MAREP is funded primarily through charitable donations and research and education grants
