General Accountability

This position is accountable to the Associate Director, Institutional Programs in the Office of Research. The incumbent provides administrative support to the Institutional Programs section of the Office of Research for all of the institutional programs (Canada Research Chairs, Canada Foundation for Innovation, the NCE’s Centres of Excellence in Commercialization and Research, Ontario Research Fund {Research Excellence and Research Infrastructure}, Premier’s Discovery Award, Premier’s Catalyst Award, Premier’s Summit Award, Early Researcher Award, and MRI’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Award. The incumbent also has specific responsibility for regular monitoring and servicing of all the Ontario Innovation Trust awards, Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund awards, and Premiers Research Excellence Awards.  The incumbent must have a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of each program, including their unique matching requirements and nature of industrial involvement, as well as University policies as they relate to research grants and contracts, financial management, purchasing and human resources.

 

The incumbent works closely with the Associate Director, Institutional Programs and other staff within Institutional Programs. The incumbent also interacts with the Associate Vice-President, University Research; the Vice-President, University Research; the Director, Research Ethics; the Contracts Research and Industrial Grants Managers, Research Financial Analysts; the Graduate Studies Office; Human Resources; UW Retail Services and Departmental Services; and researchers and administrators from all six faculties and the federated university and affiliated colleges. In addition, the incumbent interacts with administrative personnel of the agencies that sponsor Institutional awards and also has specific program responsibilities.

Nature and Scope

The Institutional Programs division of the Office of Research has administrative responsibility for multi-million dollar Institutional grants and contracts and also oversees the preparation of nominations for special highly prestigious awards. The level of involvement associated with Institutional Program awards is generally higher than for other research awards administered by the Office of Research. In particular, the Institutional Programs division has responsibility not only for overseeing the preparation of applications for Institutional Awards, but also for negotiating award agreements, administering  successful awards for their duration, and  tracking funding envelopes.  In addition, the Institutional Programs division oversees the preparation of external nominations for special programs such as the Ontario Premier’s Discovery Award and the IEEE program. The Institutional Programs division also administers the matching industrial funds that are associated with a number of its programs.

Statistical Data

Total UW research funding for the year 2006/07 was ~$130 million.  Typically, 25 to 30% of this total funding is attributable to Institutional programs.
