Primary Purpose
This position is responsible for developing programs and systems within the Federation of Students that smooth student transitions from applicant to new student, on-campus student to off-campus student, and from student to alumni from the perspective of their involvement in all activities of the Federation of Students. This position coordinates and oversees a number of events and programs occurring on- and off-campus throughout the year, which are campus-wide in nature.
Key Accountabilities:
1. Responsible for the implementation and achievement of Annual Plans
- Provide overall direction to the department and play a leadership role in fostering collaboration through the development and stewardship of key relationships with student groups, external agencies, individuals, and community leaders, and proactively initiating and advancing strategic initiatives
- Develops, monitors, and adheres to the annual department budget
2. Responsible for new student, off-campus student, and alumni connections and programming:
- Develops programs and systems that increase involvement and retention of all undergraduate students in all Federation activities throughout their undergraduate life cycle
- Promote a positive viewpoint of off-campus undergraduate students in all local communities, including the Cities of Cambridge, Kitchener, Stratford, and Waterloo through events and programs that engage students in their local communities
- Research, develop and implement opportunities to promote engagement of alumni in Federation activities through Reunion, Homecoming, and student recognition events
3. Oversees the implementation of organization goals and strategies into all campus Orientation activities:
- Responsible for implementation of an organization-wide approach to transitioning all new undergraduate members to all activities of the Federation with student engagement and empowerment as key philosophies
- Manage strategic planning process for Orientation, in conjunction with Faculty and Student Success Office partners
- Manage the budgeting process of Orientation, with accountability for and annual operating budget totalling over $900,000
- Co-administers the First-Year Experience Institute, a training program for over 1200 annual student and staff participants including development of program content
- Responsible for reviewing and approving all risk management processes of Orientation and large-scale events
4. Responsible for developing and maintaining enhanced relationships with on-campus and community partners:
- Liaise with partners within Alumni Affairs, Student Success Office, Housing, Federated and Associated Universities & Colleges, Community Relations & Events, and Faculties, as well as community partners such as the Cities of Cambridge, Kitchener, Stratford, and Waterloo
- Act as a key institutional contact for partners on relevant programs and systems and provide institutional continuity to such partnerships
5. Provides support, direction, leadership, coordination and/or expert advice to the Executive Committee on issues relating to community relations and events:
- Through valued contacts and from personal networks and participation, identifies emerging priorities, issues, projects, etc. with the potential to influence the organization’s top priorities
- Assists with the development of proposals and briefings for or to community agencies and groups
Position Requirements
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Masters in a related field an asset.
Experience:
5 years progressive management experience in student affairs and student development. Experience working with student governments and demonstrated understanding of student government cultures is essential.

Nature and Scope
Interpersonal Skills:
Internally, communicates with the Executive, the General Manager, the Research & Policy Officer, and employees from Marketing & Communications Department and Campus Life Department. Externally, this position will have significant contact with politicians, university administrators, and civil staff from all levels of government.
Level of Responsibility:
The position is responsible for the continuous advancement of priorities identified by the President, General Manager and Students’ Council.
Decision-Making Authority:
Responsible and accountable for establishing the priorities for the department and addressing the changes to strategic plans by consulting directly with the President and General Manager as appropriate.
Physical and Sensory Demands:
Minimal demands typical of an office position.
Working Environment:
With the dynamic nature of student government, the working environment is atypical of a traditional office position. The student leaders, including the President, change over each year providing for a potential shift in priorities and goals each year. Position may include some travel. Evenings and Weekends as required.
