Primary Purpose

This position is responsible for supervising the Accounting department including setting annual goals, strategic analysis of the department and implementation of areas of the organization’s long-range plan under the department’s purview.  This position provides constant leadership to the department, staff and students, consistently coaching and empowering them with their accounting and internal control decisions.  Responsible for ensuring GAAP, tax laws, CRA guidelines and Federation and University accounting policies are followed organization-wide including 5 commercial units, 7 service units, 8 societies, 160 clubs, 2 support departments, and 3 special services.  With the turnover of the highest decision makers each year, there is constant coaching and functional direction required.

Key Accountabilities:

1.   Has overall  management responsibility for Federation of Student’s financial department as well as all associated accounting functions:


2.  Management and direct supervision of  Accounting Department staff


3. Position will supervise the organization’s annual audit


4.  Monitor whether Societies are financially responsible making recommendations when appropriate


5.  Manage the Fed Bus Service and liaison with the company provider.


6.  Manage the daily activity of the General Office

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

This position interacts regularly with students and must have an ability to effectively communicate organizational needs and balance the ultimate goal of serving and empowering students.  To be effective the person should have excellent interpersonal skills to interact and manage staff as well as build relationships and liaise with other UW departments and external vendors. 

Level of Responsibility:

The Accounting Manager will ensure the generation of timely, effective and accurate financial statements by formulating and maintaining appropriate accounting standards and effectively utilizing appropriate software.  This position will be responsible for providing explanations, interpretations and analysis of the statements to Unit Managers.  The Accounting Manager will also develop and maintain adequate internal controls to safeguard the corporation’s assets.  The incumbent will manage the daily activity of the General Office.

Decision-Making Authority:

This position makes operational and strategic decisions for the Accounting department.  The position would assist all staff with any accounting related questions/problems.  Makes recommendations to General Manager and VP Operations and Finance regarding controls, budget variances, accounting staffing requirements and financial management.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Consistent daily distractions with student/staff questions.  Attention to detail for this position is very high.  Given the complexity of some of the job responsibilities and the volume of transactions and number of students/staff/departments involved in creating the transactions, the ability to focus and problem solve is quite high.

Working Environment:

Constant interruptions and regular change in direction offer some unique challenges to this office based position.
