General Accountability
Nature and Scope
Carry out the assignments, as outlined below, with respect to those computing facilities known as the WATSTAR system, which are under the control of the Engineering Computing Department. The incumbent is required to create short-term operational plans, supervise staff, manage all hardware operations, and exercise budgetary responsibilities with respect to the following tasks:
- Troubleshoot and maintain all hardware in the system including workstations, servers, network cabling and interconnection devices, printers, disk drives, and tape backup devices. Keep records or system hardware problems and downtime. Devise and implement ways of improving overall system reliability for the benefit of all system users.
- Evaluate and recommend purchases of new and replacement hardware.
- Evaluate and recommend purchases of hardware service contracts from outside suppliers. Supervise the activities of personnel from these contractors.
- Setup, install, and test all new hardware added to the systems.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all hardware items and system may showing the locations of all major hardware items and their interconnections.
- Act a resource person and advisor to professors, teaching assistants, staff, and students on matters relating to the network and other general computing hardware matters. This will require the incumbent to keep current with various computer developments in the industry and at other universities.
- Assist the Dean and Associate Dean of Engineering Computing in strategic planning for the Faculty by providing reports and advice on various matters to the Associate Dean of Engineering Computing.
- Perform other duties from time to time as may be assigned by the Dean and the Associate Dean of Engineering Computing.
The incumbent will work closely with the Manager: Systems Software & Network Performance, and the Manager: Applications Software & User Services, to ensure that the network operates effectively, efficiently, and reliably.
