Primary Purpose

The Associate Director (AD), Advancement in the School of Optometry & Vision Science, works within the context of the University’s Office of Advancement and its policies and procedures and reports directly to the Director of the School of Optometry & Vision Science and to the Director of Advancement of the Faculty of Science. The Associate Director, Advancement acts as the key point person with respect to advancement for the School of Optometry & Vision Science. 


The Associate Director, Advancement provides strategy direction and guidance to a professional staff involved in fundraising, alumni and stakeholder relations and advancement communications on Optometry & Vision Science related, advancement focused initiatives. 


Primary responsibilities involve the strategic planning for the School of Optometry & Vision Science’s advancement activities including designing and implementing fundraising campaigns and special appeals, managing the major gifts portfolio and providing leadership, managerial and professional advice to the Director of the School of Optometry & Vision Science with respect to fundraising strategies and approaches, liaising and consulting on University-wide development and alumni procedures and guidelines as appropriate with Faculty of Science Advancement and the University’s Office of Advancement and recruiting, training and coordinating initiatives with fundraising volunteers.


Other management responsibilities include overseeing the planning and development of communications materials in support of the School’s advancement objectives, planning and implementing alumni relations initiatives, developing and stewarding endowment funds, and managing special events to support the cultivation of major individual, corporate and foundation prospects and donors.


The Director of the School of Optometry & Vision Science and the Director of Advancement, Faculty of Science will participate in providing input into the development and approval of the Associate Director’s plans and objectives and participate in the measurement and assessment of activity and performance. 


Working in a collaborative team environment, the AD will work closely with other staff in Advancement, the Development/Alumni Officers from the Faculties, other professional schools and the federated university and affiliated university colleges (FUAC), and with the campus community (Senior Administrators, Deans, College Heads, faculty, staff, students, and volunteers).

Develops a national network of senior volunteers, spokespersons and leaders, identifying, motivating and advising on their activities. 


Position Requirements


Completion of a university degree required.  CFRE or fundraising certificate is a strong asset.



Recent fundraising experience with extensive experience in securing major gifts; or extensive equivalent education and experience.  Preference for applicants having previous education and/or experience in the health care sector, for profit related industry experience or not for profit related health care organizations.  Must have a successful track record of soliciting and closing major gifts as well as senior volunteer management experience.  Proven ability to think strategically and work independently in driving new initiatives and enhancing existing programs and be able to effectively articulate these initiatives.  This is a demanding, challenging and exciting role that requires a results-oriented and creative individual with demonstrated relationship building skills.  A proven track record of success in an outreach capacity including developing and executing strategies, project management, and producing a variety of material. A keen awareness and knowledge of relevant individuals in the corporate sector (i.e. pharmaceutical, medical technologies, health care etc..) related associations, community and government is necessary; an established network is an asset. Excellent time management skills and demonstrated ability to meet competing deadlines in an organized manner. Must have strong leadership, communication (oral and written), presentation, and interpersonal skills; supervisory and mentoring experience is strongly preferred.  Proven ability to work collaboratively in a high functioning team within a dynamic environment. Strong understanding of the university environment including the integration of research; an in-depth understanding of the Faculty of Science, School of Optometry & Vision Science is an asset.  Experience fundraising in a university environment is a strong asset. Occasional travel as well as evening and week-end work is a requirement of this position.
