Nature and Scope

The Early Childhood Education Centre, ECEC, is a preschool and research facility for the general community and undergraduate, graduate students and faculty in the Psychology Department.  The ECEC is licensed by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services under the Day Nurseries Act and is operated by the Department of Psychology and is staffed with three full time Head Teachers, two part time Teaching Assistants, a Full time Director and a part-time administrative staff member.  The ECEC offers developmentally appropriate curriculum programming to children of preschool and junior kindergarten age from the local community and is licensed for 32 children enrolled in the morning and afternoon programs.  The ECEC has two equally important mandates:  provision of preschool programs and psychology research activity.  The focus of the children’s program is to help children reach optimal social, emotional, cognitive, physical and creative development in a structured setting.  Cognitive and social problem solving skills, independence, confidence and positive self esteem are important aspects of the curriculum.  Undergraduate, graduate student and faculty conduct observational and/or interactive research with children 2.5 to 5 years of age and provides opportunities for UW students to gain practical experience working with young children as volunteers.  The ECEC acts as a field placement setting for MASc students in Developmental Communication Science, early childhood education students from Conestoga College and co-op education students from local high schools. The Teaching Assistant is responsible for assisting the Head Teachers in the implementation of the ECEC program.
