General Accountability
The Fine Arts Studio Technician is accountable to the Department Chair for managing the daily operations of the Fine Arts wood and welding workshops and 10 studios. S/he designs, fabricates and maintains equipment for studios and other classrooms, the art galleries, lecture rooms, and offices, and provides technical assistance to the faculty, staff and students in the Department of Fine Arts.
Nature and Scope
The Department of Fine Arts has three distinct academic fields: Art History, Film Studies, and Studio. The Fine Arts Studio Technician supervises and assists students on the proper and safe use of the woodshop and woodshop equipment. S/he provides safety workshops, maintains department tools and safety equipment, assists in teaching tool operation and workshop skills and provides technical assistance to students.

Specific Accountabilities
- Co-operatively responsible for the daily operation of the Fine Arts workshop and studios during all three academic terms;
- Supervises and instructs undergraduate and graduate students in the safe operation and use of all power and hand tools in the student shops
- Assists faculty and instructional staff with demonstrations pertaining to course projects;
- Assists students with projects and manufacturing requirements; helps to determine the most appropriate method to achieve project goals, provides training and guidance in the use of equipment and materials as required; assists in teaching tool operation and general workshop skills;
- Assists as required with installation and lighting and installation of student work in the department’s four galleries;
- Prepares and delivers safety courses to students and others as required; serves as the Department’s Safety Officer; arranges WHMIS courses and testing;
- educates and supervises student shop users regarding material and equipment safety and appropriate housekeeping practices; maintains safety equipment in good working order;
- Ensures the security and maintenance of the department tool crib;
- Maintains machinery and equipment in good working order, including permanent fixed teaching equipment; provides general upkeep in the studios;
- Maintains inventory control; orders new equipment and materials as required;
- Exercises fiscal responsibility in the use and replacement of materials, tools, and equipment;
- Hires, trains, schedules and supervises studio monitors (up to 6 work/study students; Co-op placements);
- Assists faculty in planning and design of studio setup for specific courses;
- Distributes equipment to students as required.
