General Accountability
This position is primarily responsible and accountable to the Manager, Publications Office, who reports to the Director, Communications & Public Affairs. The incumbent should demonstrate leadership and fulfill the job requirements to the highest capability with the goal of advancing the university's overall communications and public affairs agenda.
As the Publications Office operates on a cost recovery basis, this position is contingent on funding
Nature and Scope
The Publications Office produces major external publications for faculties and units across campus, including the University of Waterloo Magazine, newsletters, reports, and brochures. Recently the office has been involved in the development of web sites as well. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting research, writing, and assisting in the production of these publications. As one of only two full-time employees in the Publications Office, this person will also be responsible for acting in the Manager’s absence.

Specific Accountabilities
The incumbent will:
- conduct research, interview, and write items for both print and web publications produced by the Publications Office
- provide editorial and proofreading copy, and review page proofs
- serve as project leader on certain publications, including guiding clients in all stage of development of publications and working with members of the production team – such as freelance writers and designers – on implementation
- manage certain clients, including fielding requests for work, develop budgets and timelines for projects, and ensure that work is done on time and within budget
- participate in all aspects of production of both print and electronic publications, including electing photographs and negotiating permissions, prepare copy and photographs for use in publications, and organize materials for designers
- contribute to the efficient operation of the Publications Office, handling phone calls and correspondence as required and performing other duties as requested by the Manager.
