Primary Purpose

Within the context of a rapidly evolving print and digital environment, the incumbent is responsible for the effective planning, support and management of collections and services in the Doris Lewis Rare Book Room and the University Archives.  By collaboration with faculty, staff and students, the incumbent ensures and advances the role for special collections in the research, teaching and learning of the University.

Position Requirements


ALA-accredited Master of Library Science degree, or equivalent. 


Demonstrated progressive responsibility and experience in leadership and management with a proven track record of achievement and success within a higher education environment; academic research experience within a rapidly evolving print and digital environment.  Competencies will include strategic thinking, project management, development and donor relations, metadata, archival science, information technology, collections management, instruction and training, human resources, interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.


Awareness of web presence and digitization standards and best practices, including imaging, tools, metadata, access, storage and preservation; awareness of institutional compliance and liability obligations; preferred: experience with digitization of special collections and/or archival materials

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

Internally, communicates with all employees in all groups and departments and at all levels to deal with, influence and motivate others, and to address highly sensitive matters.  Externally, this position will cultivate significant contacts with donors and other parties and will be involved in settling highly sensitive, confidential matters that are critical to the organization.

Level of Responsibility:

The position is responsible and accountable for the overall results of the departments and committees.

Decision-Making Authority:

Responsible and accountable for establishing the priorities for the department and addressing the changes to strategic business plans by consulting with members of the Library Manager’s Group and Library Executive as appropriate.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Ability to occasionally lift and move records boxes of up to 12 kg (30 lb.).

Working Environment:

Minimal exposure to disagreeable conditions typical of a department head position exposed to stress and pressure associated with those responsibilities.
