Primary Purpose

The Executive Officer provides strategic advice and support to the Dean and senior administration of the Faculty and as the senior administrative staff member in the Faculty of Engineering, the Executive Officer provides continuity as academic leadership changes. The Executive Officer is responsible for financial oversight of the Faculty of Engineering, human resources administration; and management and oversight of other administrative functions required to support the teaching and research missions of the Faculty. This position also provides leadership and support on special projects and strategic initiatives.

Position Requirements


A graduate degree in a discipline related to business administration or finance is required. Additional education or training in human resources administration is an asset.


The Executive Officer is the senior administrative staff position in the Faculty of Engineering. The position has two major areas of responsibility: as senior financial advisor and risk manager, the Executive Officer brings significant experience in activity based funding to their financial oversight role and has significant experience with human resource management, issue resolution and sound understanding of legislation related to hiring and managing academic and staff employees. The incumbent must have experience in roles of progressive responsibility in an academic setting. Advanced knowledge of and experience interpreting UW policies, procedures, and guidelines preferred.

The Executive Officer must demonstrate outstanding leadership and management skills and be a strategic and pragmatic thinker. Excellent interpersonal skills are required. It is critical to possess outstanding verbal and written communication skills and have a proven record in demonstrating tact, judgment, and diplomacy. Must be confident, organized, and an accomplished problem solver and be able to quickly assimilate information and analyze data. Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions is required.
