General Accountability

The Manager of Information Technology Services (MITS) leads and manages  a team of Information Technology (IT) personnel responsible for the management,  operation and security of the department’s computing and information technology infrastructure and systems. The MITS is the senior IT specialist in the department and therefore must have broad skills and knowledge of current and evolving information technology and practice and more extensive skills and knowledge specific and relevant to the field of Chemical Engineering, Nanotechnology and related departmental business activities. The MITS is the principal source of IT leadership and expertise for all constituents of the department. The MITS participates in the technical and managerial work of the department. The MITS in conjunction with the department chair is responsible for strategic planning, policy creation, provisioning and management of information technology and multimedia activities for the department. The MITS is responsible for providing all information technology services required to support the department’s activities and its interaction with other faculties and departments on campus and other business entities off campus.  The MITS works in conjunction with all campus IT service units to support the department’s activities. This position reports to the chair of the department of Chemical Engineering.  

Nature and Scope

The department chair and associate chairs provide the operational management of all administrative, teaching, research and external business activities of the Department of Chemical Engineering and components of the Nanotechnology Engineering program. The MITS is the leader of a team that provides computer and information technology services to support these activities. The MITS is responsible for management of members of the IT services group. This management includes hiring, performance reviews, duty assignment, supervision, scheduling, establishment of procedures, policies and standards and directing the group’s efforts to meet the needs of the department’s activities. The MITS maintains a very broad knowledge of current, evolving and emerging information technology and more extensive skills and knowledge specific and relevant to Chemical Engineering and NanoTechnology. The MITS is responsible for investigating, testing and implementing new and emerging technology to improve and meet the changing needs of the department’s activities and priorities. The MITS is the principal source of IT expertise and leadership for all faculty, staff, students and visiting scholars in the department. The MITS provides consultative and collaborative expertise and leadership to ensure the efficient and effective use of current and emerging information technology and resources  for all research, teaching, administrative, technical service and business activities including hardware and software specification and licensing, research group operation, research support, research laboratory  operation,  research proposals, administrative work flow, administrative data services, computer aided teaching , multimedia presentation, inter and intra group collaborative research,  technical services work flow,  recruitment etc.  The MITS works closely with the chair of the department of Chemical Engineering to ensure efficient and effective use of IT resources. The MITS  is the principal communicator and collaborator  with other  IT services  units  on and off campus as  required to meet the IT  needs of the department’s activities.

Departmental personnel = Approximately 1000 faculty, staff, students( including nanotech program) and visiting scholars.

Major funding sources outside of the faculty of Engineering and  include CFI (Canada Foundation for Innovation), CRC (Canada Research Chair), NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada), OIT (Ontario Innovation Trust), ORDCF (Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund), PREA (The Premier's Research Excellence Awards Program), and numerous national and international companies.  The Department has a significant amount of contract funding.

Specific Accountabilities

The Manager of Information and Technology Services is accountable to the chair of the department of chemical engineering.

Working Conditions

Normally, the Manager carries out all responsibilities during UW business hours, but might infrequently be called upon to work outside of UW business hours if emergency conditions warrant.
