Primary Purpose

Provides supports to the Faculty Financial Officer to ensure that all financial activity in the Faculty of Science is appropriately accounted for and that internal processes and controls and management tools are effectively applied. The Faculty Financial Analyst is responsible for the delivery of various reports in support of the Office of the Dean of Science activity, and provision of other financial information identified by the Dean, Executive Officer and Faculty Financial Officer to support financial management, planning and control within the Faculty of Science.

Position Requirements

Education:

Undergraduate degree or equivalent related education/experience and a recognized accounting designation (CA, CGA, CMA) or near completion of a recognized accounting designation.

Experience:

4-6 years of progressive accounting experience. Proven experience in development and delivery of reporting tools for financial information.  Competencies will include excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills, and proven planning and organizational skills. Supervisory/management experience is an asset.

Nature and Scope

Interpersonal Skills:

This position is required to communicate financial information within the Faculty of Science, and to provide direction to financial administrative staff to ensure adherence with generally accepted accounting principles, the university’s financial policies, procedures and guidelines. Communication skills must be geared to both financial and non-financial individuals. This position will also interact with professional and administrative staff from other units on campus, primarily but not limited to, Finance, Office of Research, Human Resources, and other Faculties. External contact primarily is with auditors.

Level of Responsibility:

This position is responsible for monitoring, interpreting and reporting on financial activity within the Faculty of Science. In conjunction with the above activity, this position helps assess whether generally accepted accounting principles, and university policies and guidelines are being followed.

Decision-Making Authority:

This position exercises judgement in identifying improvements to financial processes for the Faculty of Science, and participates in the implementation of improved processes and internal controls. In collaboration with the Faculty Financial Officer and Finance interprets and applies University of Waterloo finance related policies and guidelines.

Physical and Sensory Demands:

Minimal physical demands; operating within an office environment.

Working Environment:

Minimal exposure to disagreeable physical conditions.  The Office of the Dean of Science is a busy team oriented environment.
